The Government Hill community has a new piece of public artwork inside The Commons.

Anchorage based artist Linda Infante-Lyons created the piece inspired by images of weeds she found throughout the city. "There's an interesting combination of growth, decay, of industrial, organic and having the tower here and then these weeds — it's really an interesting and eclectic mix of different elements that I love."

Infante-Lyons used the images to make giant stencils for the mural, creating a silhouetted layer with pops of brighter weeds painted on top.

The once vacant lot is transitioning into a community orchard.

"The history of weeds are associated with human activity so wherever humans go we bring along our plants from wherever we come from there's a certain element of colonization," she said. "That was something on my mind."

Images of the iconic water and radio towers are featured in the mural. Infante-Lyons also created a mural in Mountain View at the Hispanic Cultural Center.

A ribbon cutting for the mural is scheduled for Monday, September 24 at 5:30 p.m.
