JUNEAU, Alaska (KTUU) - The Juneau Assembly passed a resolution Thursday declaring a local emergency in anticipation of the annual glacial outburst flood expected this summer.

By passing the resolution, the Assembly authorizes City Manager Katie Koester to take all “reasonable emergency actions” to protect the residents of Juneau. The resolution also requests Gov. Mike Dunleavy to provide continued state public and individual assistance as available.

Flooding in Mendenhall Valley in recent years has left dozens of homes underwater after the nearby Suicide Basin released a torrent of meltwater. The flooding has typically come in early to mid-August.

The 2023 and 2024 flooding outbursts resulted in record-breaking and widespread damage and homes being swept up in the water. On Aug. 10, 2025, Gov. Dunleavy issued a State Disaster Declaration in advance of any possible flooding.

The declaration will remain in effect until Dec. 15.
