The new Gateway Visitors Center: A good first stop when planning a visit to the Mat-Su Borough
If you’re local or from far away, the Gateway can help when visiting the Mat-Su
PALMER, Alaska (KTUU) - The Matanuska-Susitna Borough Gateway Visitors Center is ready for visitors. It’s newly opened and waiting to share the Mat-Su with everyone.
The 9,400-square foot building also includes a classroom for events and the offices for the Matanuska-Susitna Convention and Visitors Bureau. Built with grants and matching money, it’s been 19 years in the making, breaking ground last March and now ready for visitors.
Located at mile 36 of the Glenn Highway, it’s the first right after the Parks and Glenn interchange as you drive towards Palmer.
Now open every day from 10 a.m. – 6 p.m., visitors will find displays offering ideas for activities during all four seasons. History and culture are on display.
One of the best features is the digital kiosks to help plan your visit. An itinerary is opened, activities are selected — where to stay, where to eat and where to visit. The kiosk then sets up a driving map with driving time and distances to each of your choices. The digital itinerary can then be transferred to a phone. The visit to the Mat-Su is ready to enjoy.
There is even a designated selfie spot with a view of the Chugach Mountains.
