Alaska Flag Day honors Designer Benny Benson

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU) - Benny Benson was a teenager, in the 7th grade in 1926 when he entered a contest to design the flag for Alaska. The contest was open to kids in grades 7 to 12. The youngster had the creativity and imagination to come up with the winning design for the Alaska State Flag!

He was also a child cared for by the Jesse Lee Home in the 1920s, which is the present-day Alaska Child and Family. Each year on July 9th, they honor Benson’s contribution to the state’s legacy.
