Police release body camera video from fatal August shooting of Anchorage woman
ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU) - Anchorage police have released body camera video from the fatal August shooting of 53-year-old Lora Brady at a downtown apartment building, more than a month after the department’s 45-day window for releasing footage.
The video captures officers’ attempts to contact Brady during the Aug. 18 response at the Adelaide Single Room Occupancy apartments on E. 9th Ave, as well as the sound of a gunshot.
Police said staff called 911 after Brady threatened to harm herself and pointed a gun at employees. Members of the Mobile Intervention Team and crisis negotiators tried to reach her from inside and outside the building.
“Lulu, can I call you?” a voice can be heard asking in the video. Later, another attempt: “Lulu, we know you’re inside, and this is probably pretty scary.”
Police said Brady did not follow commands to surrender, and SWAT officers were called in. In the video, an officer tells Brady, “Anchorage police, we need you to set that gun down and step outside with your hands empty.”
Police have said Brady pointed what they thought was a gun out a window toward officers and a nearby school. The body camera footage does not show what officers said they saw.
A single gunshot can be heard in the video. Police said Officer Misha Carlson fired the shot, striking Brady in the upper body. She died at the scene.
Police Chief Sean Case said at an Aug. 28 news conference Brady had a BB gun resembling a higher-caliber pistol and officers did not know it was a BB gun at the time. He also said the shooting was not completely captured on body camera.
Under department policy, body camera video of critical incidents, including officer-involved shootings, is generally to be released within 45 days. The deadline in Brady’s case was Oct. 2. Police said in an Oct. 3 update that the release was delayed because the Office of Special Prosecutions had not yet said its investigation was complete.
